Center for Tai - Kadai Ethnic Groups Studies

The aim of the Center for Tai-Kadai Ethnic Groups Studies is to provide, collect, classify and offer services related to the special area of information resource; for example, information resources about the Tai-Kadai ethnic groups, theses and dissertations in the field of humanities, biographies of Arts alumni and faculty members, works by Arts alumni and faculty members and rare books.


Center for Tai-Kadai Ethnic Groups Studies

This consists of linguistic data and costumes of the women of the Tai-Kadai ethnic groups, obtained from a field research, entitled “Tai-Kadai: Languages and Ladies’ Costumes”. The research was to commemorate the sixtieth birthday of Her Majesty the Queen in 1992. It was conducted by Prof. Dr. Pranee Kullavanijya and Prof. Dr. Theraphan Luangthongkum from 1992 -1997. The research covered the Tai ethnic groups in four countries: Yunnan , Kwang Si, Kwai Chou and Hai Nan Provinces in the People’s Republic of China , the People’s Democratic Republic of Laos, the Republic of Vietnam and Thailand .

 

Classification

The information obtained from the field research is related to dwelling places, languages used in daily life, what they call themselves and women’s costumes. The information has been classified according to the ethnic groups based on linguistic criteria. The information is available in the form of slides, costumes, accessories, women’s belongings and published items.

Information Resource Database

The data-base consists of databases of slides and costumes, books, articles and journals, maps showing dwelling locations of the Tai-Kadai Ethnic Groups, languages and folktales.

How to Search

The information on the Tai-Kadai ethnic groups can be retrieved through the name of a tribe, a book title, an essay, a subject on the Center’s website via Chulalongkorn University ’s website.
