We are saddened by the news of Arthur Abramson’s passing. Ajarn Arthur was an eminent phonetician, a dedicated teacher, and a well-beloved person. His 1962 dissertation “The vowels and tones of Standard Thai: Acoustical measurements and experiments” is the first modern and the most influential acoustic study of Thai. Moreover, his 1964 highly influential cross-linguistic study “A cross-language study of voicing in initial stops: Acoustical measurements” sets the course for subsequent research on consonant voicing to these days. Not only do his numerous studies have an enduring impact on the phonetic study of Thai and many Southeast Asian languages, they also advance our understanding of acoustics and perception of human speech in general.

It was a privilege and a great honour for our department to have collaborated with him and to have received his generosity. During the four decades of our friendship, he shared with us his unsurpassable expertise and helped mentoring many of our graduate students. Our thoughts are with his family. May our Ajarn Arthur rest in eternal peace.
