This introductory workshop is designed for those wanting to learn more about the study of language in the public space, the goals of which are:

  • To familiarize researchers and graduate students with the field as it has emerged and evolved as an area of scholarly research in the Twenty-First Century;
  • To provide a theoretical framework through which to analyze the language and other semiotic affordances found in the public space;
  • To examine how the study of linguistic landscapes has contributed to our understanding of issues of identity, diversity and cultural change;
  • To explore ways in which the linguistic landscape can be used as a pedagogical resource in language classrooms.

In addition, through a mixture of discussion, lecture, and hands-on activities, this workshop is designed to enable participants to articulate key areas of interest and challenges they face in conducting their own research and teaching with LL, while taking next steps toward an actionable plan

The workshop is free of charge and available for the public. However, due to the limited number of seats, the registration will be on a first-come-first-serve basis. The participants are required to bring their own laptop/tablet in order to participate in the workshop. See the schedule here.
