คุณสมบัติของผู้มีสิทธิสมัครสอบ
เป็นผู้ที่กำลังศึกษาระดับชั้นมัธยมศึกษาตอนปลายหรือเทียบเท่าที่ศึกษาในประเทศไทย หรือเป็นผู้สำเร็จการศึกษาชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 6 หรือเทียบเท่าจากสถานศึกษาในประเทศไทย ทั้งนี้ผู้สมัครสอบต้องมีอายุไม่เกิน 20 ปีในวันที่แข่งขันภาษาศาสตร์โอลิมปิกระหว่างประเทศ (ประมาณเดือนกรกฎาคม) ผู้สมัครสามารถสมัครสอบเป็นรายบุคคลได้ ไม่จำเป็นต้องสมัครในนามโรงเรียน
Eligibility
All contestants must currently be studying at high school level, or equivalent, in Thailand or must have graduated from an institution of secondary education, or equivalent, in Thailand in the 2021 academic year. Contestants must still be 20 years old or younger by the time the International Linguistics Olympiad comes around (usually in July). Contestants need not have discussed their entry with their school and can register independently.

ผู้ที่สอบได้คะแนนสูงสุดในการแข่งขันประมาณ 20-30 คน (ตามประกาศในแต่ละปี) จะเป็นผู้ผ่านเข้ารอบไปเป็นตัวแทนประเทศไทยเข้าแข่งขันภาษาศาสตร์โอลิมปิกเอเชียแปซิฟิก (Asia Pacific Linguistics Olympiad หรือ APLO) ซึ่งเป็นการแข่งขันในระดับภูมิภาค การแข่งขันภาษาศาสตร์โอลิมปิกเอเชียแปซิฟิก ผู้ที่ได้คะแนนสูงสุดในการแข่งขันภาษาศาสตร์โอลิมปิกเอเชียแปซิฟิก จำนวน 4 คน เป็นตัวแทนประเทศไทยในการแข่งขันภาษาศาสตร์โอลิมปิกระหว่างประเทศ (International Linguistics Olympiad หรือ IOL)
ผู้ผ่านการคัดเลือกในการสอบ ภอท. จะต้องเข้าร่วมการอบรมเตรียมความพร้อมตามที่กำหนดจึงจะมีสิทธิ์ได้เป็นตัวแทนประเทศไทยเข้าร่วมการแข่งขันภาษาศาสตร์โอลิมปิกเอเชียแปซิฟิก และภาษาศาสตร์โอลิมปิกระดับนานาชาติ
Examination
Approximately 20-30 contestants with the highest scores from the first round will be invited to compete in the Asia Pacific Linguistics Olympiad (APLO), a regional linguistics olympiad, representing Thailand. Four contestants with the highest scores from the Asia Pacific Linguistics Olympiad will be invited to represent Thailand in the International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL).
Those who pass the exam must attend the training sessions as determined by the committee to be eligible to represent Thailand in APLO and IOL. The training schedule will be announced later.
