New Ways of Analyzing Variation – Asia Pacific 7 (NWAV-AP 7)

The 7th meeting of the New Ways of Analyzing Variation – Asia Pacific conference (NWAV-AP 7) will take place at the Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, from 14-16 December 2022 in a hybrid format. The conference is hosted by the Department of Linguistics and the Southeast Asian Linguistics Research Unit (ChulaSEAL), Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University.

NWAV-AP offers researchers an opportunity to present and exchange ongoing issues in the scope of language variation and change in the Asia-Pacific region. The theme of this year’s conference is “language variation and shifting values across generations.” Many social movements driven by people of younger generations have recently taken place in the Asia-Pacific region, reflecting social dynamics and rapidly shifting values. With population aging underway and the world constantly changing, a clash of opinions and personalities among different generations is inevitable. As linguistic practices are significant for not only forming individual self but also characterizing a generation, the study of language variation and change can shed light on generational differences and transitions in society. We particularly invite papers on language variation and change which speak to this theme including, but not limited to, intergenerational variation, generational variation, age grading, and change across the lifespan. Other papers on language variation and change across the Asia-Pacific region are also welcome.

Plenary speakers

Hideko Abe (Colby College): “Language variation among queer speakers: Japanese trans women”
Shobha Satyanath (University of Delhi): “Using variationist approach to address an unsolved historical puzzle”
