  • 21 July The Department of Comparative Literature in collaboration with the International Tipitaka Hall, Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University, arranged the fifth seminar in the Project of Knowledge and Ethics at the International Tipitaka Hall, Maha Chulalongkorn Building. The seminar was led by Mae Chee Vimuttiyaram, the president of the International Tipitaka Hall.

The conversation was led by Professor Dr. Rawi Bhavilai, the Director of Dhamma Center, and participated by 4 faculty members and 9 graduate students from the Department of Comparative Literature.

  • December 26 In celebration of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn's Fourth Cycle Birthday Anniversary, the Department of Comparative Literature and the Asia-Europe Studies Programme under the Thailand Research Fund's sponsorship organized the twelveth lecture in the Project Salon "Surrealism and Thai Arts and Literature" by Prof. Dr. Sodchun Chaiprasat.

  • September 8 Achan Dr. Kittisak Kerdarunsuksri, an alumni of the Department of Comparative Literature was invited to have a conversation with current graduate students of the Department on the topic of "Experience of Studying Comparative Literature at London University, United Kingdom". Presently, Dr. Kittisak is a Faculty member in Thai Language for Communication and Associate Dean for Administrative Affairs, School of Humanities at University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce.

  • September 1 Achan Dr.Warunee Udomsilpa was invited to give a special lecture : "Marguerite Yourcenar's Memoires d'Hadrien " to the 4th year students of the Department of French, in the course FR 446 CONTEMPORARY FRENCH LITERATURE, at the Faculty of Liberal Arts, Thammasat University.
  • August 29 In celebration of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn's Fourth Cycle Birthday Anniversary, the Department of Comparative Literature and the Asia-Europe Studies Programme under the Thailand Research Fund's sponsorship organized the eighth lecture in the Project Salon "Siam and the West : Galileo Chini" by Achan Neungreudee Lohapon.

  • July 25 In celebration of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn's Fourth Cycle Birthday Anniversary, the Department of Comparative Literature and the Asia-Europe Studies Programme under the Thailand Research Fund's sponsorship organized the seventh lecture in the Project Salon "Thai and German Proverbs : A Comparative Study in Culture" by Assoc. Prof. Ampha Otrakul.

  • July 18 Achan Siriporn Sriwarakarn was invited to give a special lecture on the topic "Sex, Secrecy and Revealation : A Study of Thai Several Stories." The lecture has Achan Dr. Supakwadee Amatayakul as a moderator.
  • June 27 In celebration of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn's Fourth Cycle Birthday Anniversary, the Department of Comparative Literature and the Asia-Europe Studies Programme under the Thailand Research Fund's sponsorship organized the sixth lecture in the Project Salon "Persian Literature : A Vehicle for Truth-seeking" by Achan Rynan Arunrangsi. The lecture was presided over by Mr. Muhammad Ali Rabbani, Cultural Attache of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Thailand, who delivered a special introductory lecture and presented three sets of renowned Persian literary works in translation to the Faculty of Arts's Humanities Information Center, Chulalongkorn University's Center of Academic Resources, and the Department of Comparative Literature. On this occasion, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts represented Chulalongkorn University and the Faculty of Arts in receiving the presents and welcoming Mr Ali Rabbani.

  • March 28 Ms. Umarin Tularak, a graduate from the M.A. Program in Comparative Literature, Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University received a Ratchadaphisek Somphot grantee distinguished research award in the Master's degree thesis category for the year 2002 from Chulalongkorn University for her thesis Tham Khwan Rua Chants and Rites of the Southern Thai: The Creation and the Transmission. The award presentation was held at Room 111, Maha Chulalongkorn Building.

  • February 28 In celebration of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn's Fourth Cycle Birthday Anniversary, the Department of Comparative Literature and the Asia-Europe Studies Programme (under the Thailand Research Fund's sponsorship) organized the second lecture in the Project Salon "The Thai and German Si Thanonchais: A Comparative Study of Jokes in the Tileulenspiegel and Si Thanonchai Tales" by Achan Siriporn Sriwarakarn from the Department of Comparative Literature.

  • February 15 Professor Thatsani Nakwatchara and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Anongnat thakoengwit were invited by Chulalongkorn University Book Center to give a talk introducing the Thai translation of Salambo at the Siam Square branch of CU Book Center, on the occasion of the book winning a translated book award in the novel and fiction category from the Academic Department, the Ministry of Education. The book, published by the Faculty of Arts Translation and Interpretation Center, has been selected to be in the reading list of the Department of Comparative Literature's Introduction to Literature course, which is a compulsory course for Arts students.
  • February 2 Achan Dr. Waruni Udomsilpa received a National Research Council Award 2002 for her dissertation The Poetics of the Body in Marguerite Yourcenar's Novels submitted for the completion of her doctoral study in French Language and Literature at Chulalongkorn University. The award was presented by Mr. Suwit Khunkitti, Deputy Prime Minister, at the Bangkok Convention Center, 5th Floor of the Central Plaza Latphrao, Bangkok. The award presentation was attended by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thatchai Sumit, President of Chulalongkorn University and Asst. Prof. Dr. M.R. Kalaya Tingsabhad, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, who congratulated the awardee. Achan Dr. Waruni also contributed a display of her work to the "Inventor's Day Exhibition 2003" (for the Central Region) organized by the National Board of Research during February 1-3, 2003.

  • January 31 In celebration of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn's Fourth Cycle Birthday Anniversary, the Department of Comparative Literature and the Asia-Europe Studies Programme (under the Thailand Research Fund's sponsorship) organized the first lecture in the Project Salon "Maguerite Yourcenar's 'Decapitation of Kali': The East by the West" by Achan Dr. Waruni Udomsilpa from the Department of Comparative Literature. The lecture was presided over by Dr. Khajit Chittasevi, Program Director of the National Policy and Transnational Relations Division (Division1) of the Thailand Research Fund. The auxiliary activities included an exhibition and a music show.



  • January 29 The Department of Comparative Literature, the Department of English and the Asia-Europe Studies Programme (under Thailand Research Fund's sponsorship) organized a special lecture "Modernism and Nationalism in Indian and Canadian Twentieth-Century Art" by Dr. Shyamal Bagchee, Professor of English and Adjunct Professor of Comparative Studies, University of Alberta, Canada and President of the T. S. Eliot Society of America. The lecture was held at Room 707, Borommaratchakumari Building.

  • January 16 The Department of Comparative Literature, in cooperation with Chulalongkorn University's Dhamma Center, organized a talk "Human Nature and Problem Solving," led by Professor Dr. Rawi Bhavilai, the Director of the Center. The forum, the first to be held in the Department of Comparative Literature's Knowledge and Ethics Project, was aimed at promoting awareness of the significance of morality, ethics and professional ethics in Thai society among students, teachers and other personnel of the Department, and encouraging constructive dialogue and debate outside class. The forum was attended by 3 teaching and administrative members of the Department and 16 Comparative Literature students.

2002

  • December 23 Achan Dr. Warunee Udomsilpa was invited to participate in the National Research Council of Thailand's Awards press conference, on the occasion that her dissertation The Poetics of the 'Body' in Marguerite Yourcenar's Novels, submitted as part of the doctoral degree in French Language and Literature at the Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University, had won a National Research Council Awardb in the dissertation category (Philosophy) for the year 2002 (with a mention "good"). The conference was held at Vibhavadee Ballroom B, the Bangkok Sofitel Central Plaza and was accompanied by an exhibition on the researchers and works awarded.

  • December 13, 20, 27 The Department of Comparative Literature organized the presentation of Master’s degree students’ theses in progress , in which the teaching staff of the department listened and gave their comments. This presentation was held as a measure to assure the quality of the department’s theses, in accordance with the Faculty of Arts’s quality assurance system.
  • December 9 The Ph.D. Program in Literature and Comparative Literature organized the academic conference "Literary Studies in Thai Social Contexts at the Conference Room, Chulalongkorn University's Auditorium. The speakers comprised of distinguished academics from abroad, namely Dr. Sen Soshitsu, the Grand Master (Iemoto) of the Urasenke Tradition of the Way of Tea, Professor Yosuke Kotajima from Meisei University, Japan and Dr. Michael Chayut from the Chemical Heritage Foundation, USA, as well as from the Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University i.e. Asst. Prof. Dr. Trisilpa Boonkhachorn, Prof. Dr. Pornsan Watananghun, Assoc. Prof. Dr.Soraj Hongladarom and Achan Dr. Darin Pradittatsanee.



  • December 7 Associate Professor Dr. Anongnat Thakoengwit was invited by The Continuing Education Center Chulalongkorn University to give a lecture in the academic conference E-Learning in topic "E-Learning Achievements of Chulalongkorn University" at Room 704, Sasa Patasala Building. The conference was organized for the purpose of disseminating knowledge about E-Learning technology to lecturers, students and the general public.

  • December 7 The Comparative Literature Club organized the conference "Forgetting Places : Adolescence Crisis in the Globalized Society" at Room 707, Borommaratchakumari Building. The speakers were S.P. Somtow (Somtow Sucharitkul), renowed composer and author of the novel Forgetting Places, Chittakon Butsaba, a radio show host and Thaenkun Chititsara, an actor and psychology student. The conference was moderated by Asst. Prof. Dr. Trisilpa Boonkhachorn.


  • December 6 The Comparative Literature Club organized the conference "The Vietnamese Poet Nguyen Du and Sunthon Phu : A Comparison" at Room 707, Borommaratchakumari Building. The speakers were Asst. Prof. Dr. Phonphen Hantrakun and Achan Thawi Sawangpanyangkoon. The conference was moderated by Ms. Nutsarat Rayasawat, a graduate student in Comparative Literature.


  • December 6 - 9 The Comparative Literature Club held two exhibitions in Chulalongkorn University Academic Exposition 2002 : "Human Crisis in Thai Literature : Analyses of the Seven Literary Works Nominated for the SEAWRITE Award" at Room 512, Borommaratchakumari Building and "Human Crisis in the Neighboring Countries' Literatures : Analyses of Southeast Asian Literary Works" at Room 513, Borommaratchakumari Building. The Club also organized other complementary activities such as lots drawing and quizzes.

  • November 22 The Ph.D. Program in Literature and Comparative Literature, Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University in collaboration with Thailand-US Educational Foundation (Fulbright) organized the bilingual (Thai-English) Thai-American Poetry Readings in the topic "Messages of Love and Understanding". The readers included such distinguished Thai and American personages as Mr. Gary Keith from Thailand-US Educational Foundation.



  • October 11 The Ph.D Program in Literature and Comparative Literature and The Asia - Europe Studies Programme under the Thailand Research Fund held a meeting to discuss about the organization of the academic conference on Postcolonial Literature to take place in May 2003 and the plan for follow up activities.

  • September 20 The Royal Netherlands Embassy in Bangkok and the committee for the setting up of the Ph.D. program in Literature and Comparative Literature organized a special lecture on "Dutch Literature in the Colonial and Postcolonial Eras", which was given by Mr. F. Springer, a renowned Dutch writer and Dr. Liesbeth Dolk an expert on Dutch language and literature. The talk was moderated by Dr. Dhiravat Na Pombejra.

  • August 29 Department of Comparative Literature organized a special lecture on "To Huu, The First Vietnamese S.E.A. Write Awardee," which was given by Asst. Prof. Pornpen Hantrakun. On this occasion, Vietnamese poems were read and sung, accompanied by music, by distinguised Vietnamese guests and Vietnamese students from Asian Institute of Technology (AIT). The event was also joined by representatives from the Vietnamese press.


  • August 28 Achan Dr.Warunee Udomsilpa was invited to give a special lecture : "Marguerite Yourcenar's Memoires d'Hadrien " to the 4th year students of the Department of French, in the course FR 446 CONTEMPORARY FRENCH LITERATURE, at the Faculty of Liberal Arts, Thammasat University.

  • August 14 The committee for the setting up of the Ph.D. program in Literature and Comparative Literature, a joint collaboration of various departments of the Faculty of Arts, organized a special lecture on “The City as Narrator: From Modernism to Postmodernism” by Prof. Dr. Klaus Scherpe from Humboldt University, Berlin. The lecture, delivered in English, was given Thai summaries by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pornsan Watananguhn and the session was moderated by Achan Dr. Darin Praditthatsani. The lecture was presided over by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, who formally introduced the Ph.D. program in Literature and Comparative Literature to the audience.


  • July 26, August 2 and 9 The Department of Comparative Literature organized the presentation of Master’s degree students’ theses in progress, in which the teaching staff of the department listened and gave their comments.   • June The Department of Comparative Literature is host to Mr. John T. Mattioli, the 2001 Fulbright research scholar who is currently a Ph.D. student in Comparative Literature from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Starting from December 2001, John will be in Thailand for 10 months working on his research project, entitled "Struggles of/for a Poetic State: Thai Poetry as a Contested Site of Human Potential and Value," with Asst. Prof. Dr. Trisilpa Boonkhachorn
  • May 14 Orientation for new graduate students of the Department of Comparative Literature
  • March Asst. Prof. M.R. Kongkarn Tavedhikul, Deputy Dean of the Administrative Affairs, represented the Dean of the Faculty of Arts in the " China Town New Year Festival 2002", graciously presided over by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. On this occasoin Asst. Prof. M.R. Kongkarn Tavedhikul was in charge of the reservation of King Rama V and King Rama VI memorial coins and images, the benefits from which will go to the Borommaratchakumari Funds, established for the Faculty of Arts' academic development.


  • March 11-31 Asst. Prof. Dr. Trisilpa Boonkhachorn was invited by the JSPS Core University Exchange Program 2000-2001of the Kyoto University's Center for Southeast Asian Studies, to conduct and present her research under the Networks for a Comparative Historical Perspective Project, at Kyoto University, Japan.
  • February 21 Assoc. Prof. Dr. Anongnat Thakoengwit was invited by Chulalongkorn University Office of Academic Affairs to give a lecture on "Web-based Instructional Media for the Literature and History Courses" at Room 202, Chamchuri 4 Building.
  • February 4 The Department of Comparative Literature invited Prof. Robert Storey from Temple University, USA. to give a special lecture on "Darwinian Evolutionalry Criticism: An Introduction and an Application to M.R. Kukrit Pramoj's Four Reigns ," at Room 307, Barommartchakumari Building, with Achan Dr. Darin Praditthatsani as translator

  • January 31 to February 2 Asst. Prof. Dr. Trisilpa Boonkhachorn was invited by the University of the Philippines, Diliman, to present a paper and participate in a workshop on "Southeast Asian Readings for Undergraduate and Graduate Courses" at the University of the Philippines, Diliman, Manila, the Philippines. The event was co- organized by the University of Malaya Asia-Europe Institute, the University of the Philippines Center for International Studies and SEASREP Council.
  • January Silpa Suwannasak, a graduate student of the Department of Comparative Literature, won the best film criticism award in the "Young Film Critic Workshop" co-organized by the 4th Bangkok Film Festival and Praew Sudsupda Magazine, from his critical piece, "Ge Ge: The Relations and Roots of Self," which was one among over 200 competing articles. Moreover, Silpa was selected to take part in the "Trainee Project" of the International Film Festival Rotterdam during January 23-February 3, 2002.

2001

  • Throughout the year 2001, Asst. Prof. M.R. Kongkarn Tavedhikul was host to the radio program "Arts for the Public," an academic conversational presentation aimed at sharing with the public findings of researches conducted by the Faculty of Arts's lecturers. The shows, which were altogether 50 in number, were broadcast on Chula radio station on Saturdays throughout the year to commemorate the 84th anniversary of the foundation of the Faculty of Arts.
  • November 29 Achan Siriporn Sriwarakarn presented her paper, "The Role of the Children in Subverting Patriarchal Authority: A Feminist Analysis of a Children's Fiction" at the Conference on "Women and Knowledge 3: Space, Identity and Women's Knowledge Construction," organized by the Women and Youth Studies Project, Thammasat University, on November 29-30, 2001, at Thammasat University.
  • October 25-30 Asst. Prof. Dr. Trisilpa Boonkhachon participated and presented a country report in the Kuala Lumpur Southeast Asian Writers' Meeting 2001, organized by the Division of International Development of Literature of the Malaysian Literature Department, held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
  • October 18 Achan Dr. Warunee Udomsilpa presented her paper, "L'Univers du corps, l'univers de Marguerite Yourcenar" at the 8th Conference on "French Language and Literature," organized by the French Section of the Department of Western Languages, Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University, held at the Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University.


  • August 25 Achan Thanomnual Hiranyatheb was invited to give a lecture in the English subject session of the Electronic Media Creation, organized by the Faculty of Industrial Education, King Mongkut Institute of Technology-Ladkrabang, in the Knowledge and Skills Development for Graduates Project, organized by the Ministry of University Affairs
  • August - September The Department of Comparative Literature welcomed Prof. Dr.Andreas Hartmann, Professor of Folklore at Munster University who stayed in Thailand during August - September to collect information for his research. Prof. Dr.Hartmann's visit to the Department provided a good opportunity for German and Thai scholars to exchange views and could be considered a beginning of future academic co-operation.

2000

  • November 18-20. Three students and an alumnus of the Department of Comparative Literature won prizes for their criticisms in the essay competition organized by the Thailand Reserach Fund's Criticism Project. The competition was part of the Project's 2000 annual meeting held at Bangkok University--Kluai Nam Thai, during November 18-20. The four winners were:
    First runner-up prizes for dramatic criticism:
    *Sasithon Luangchinda from "'The Escape': From a Text for Reading to a Text for Performance"
    *Phonwipha Watratchanakun from "'The Escape' as the Chosen Exit"
    Prizes for literary criticism:
    *First Prize: Piyanut Rattananukun from "Who Suffered When the Poet was Battered ?"
