1996. Pawina Raroeng. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LITERARY TEXTS AND VISUAL ARTS. ABSTRACT This thesis's objective is to study the story of Ramakien, concentrating on the relationship between the literary texts and visual arts. The attempt will be made in order to study three versions of Ramakien; King Rama I's version, the verse describing of the Ramakien Mural Paintings at The Temple of The Emerald Buddha's version and the verse describing of the Ramakien Bas-reliefs at Wat Phra Chetuphon's version to compare with The Ramakien Mural Paintings at The Temple of The Emerald Buddha and The Ramakien Bas-reliefs at Wat Phra Chetuphon. It can be concluded that the literary texts and visual arts share the same characteristic of the continuing narration and the character's figures from the story of Ramakien. The Ramakien of King Rama I's version Mural Paintings have an influence to create the verse describing of the Mural Paintings. But the Ramakien Bas-reliefs and the verse describing are created to support each other. The verse describing probably have an influence to create the Ramakien - reliefs.

1996. Rangsima Kullapat. PHLAE-KAO : FROM NOVEL INTO FILM. ABSTRACT This thesis , Phlae-Kao : From Novel into Film, is a case study to see just how a novel, Phlae-Kao, is adopted for the screen. This study will also the evolution of the relationship of the Thai modern novel and film as well as adapting the Thai novel by other art forms and media. By examining the history of Thai modern novel and film, the researcher found the Thai modern novel and film began to develop an ever closer relationship since the founding of the Thai film industry, after which they seem to evolve together as composers, script writers, directors and producers selected more and more novels upon which to base their films. Phlae-Kao was the second Thai novel to be adapted to film in 1940 after which it was also used as the inspiration for movies, television dramas and music. The three film versions, 1940, 1954 and 1977, all present slightly different adaptations, depending on the period it was produced, as well as the writers', directors' and actors' interpretations. This is particularly evident in the death of Riem. After examining all documents and conducting intense research, this researcher believes the best film adaptation of Phlae-Kao was by Cherd Soongsri. For a film to succeed, it must be both artistic and commercial. It must be able to convey Thai culture to foreign audiences, and this researcher believes Cherd Soongsri's Plae-Kao does this best while it also reflects his own emotions just as a novel should for its readers.
1996. Sawwarot Mittrapiyanurak. JAMES CLAVELL'S HISTORICAL NOVELS ABOUT JAPAN : A STUDY OF RELATIONS BETWEEN LITERATURE AND HISTORY. ABSTRACT This thesis aims to study the relationship between novel and history by comparing Japanese history during the Tokugawa period, with James Clavell's historical novels, Shogun and Gai-jin. The result of the study shows that the novelist makes the historical happenings in his fictions different from the fact. As well, he invents the events and characters, and adds the stories of Japanese society and culture. However, he studied Japanese history and culture before writing these two novels. The reason why he changed the historical details is that he only intended to write interesting and exciting stories to entertain his readers. He ignored the historical accuracy. He said his fictions were not the history so it did not necessarily always relate to what truly happened. As a result, he was able to alter history and made up the stories according to his imagination and ideas.
1996. Surapon Buntusarnee. HUMOUR IN P.INTHARAPALIT'S PHON NIKON KIM- NGUAN. ABSTRACT The aim of this thesis is to study the humour in P. Intharapalit's comic novel, PHON NIKON KIM-NGUAN, and to classify and analyse the author's techniques. The result of the study shows that the humour as found in P.Intharapalit's novel originates from five sources : character, gesture, action, situation and speech. The author uses his humour ironically, satirically, sarcastically and playfully on Thai values, such as literature, mankind, institution and society, from the beginning of the Second World war to the end of Field Marshal P.Piboonsongkram's government.
1996. Anusorn Oon-no. AN ANALYSIS OF JATAKATTHAKATHA BY THE THEORY OF SYMBOLIC ANTHROPOLOGY. ABSTRACT This thesis aims at the application of the theory of Symbolic Anthropology to Jatakatthakatha , Mahamakuta Rajavidyalaya version (volumn 55 - 64) in order to analyze Jatakatthakatha as the initiation rite from Bodhisattva to Buddha, Bodhisattva's 10 principles practice as the attributes of the liminal persona , properties of Jataka Commentaries as the properties of liminal period and the rite of passage by comparing with Buddhist philosophy. It can be concluded that Jatakatthakatha as Bodhisattvachariya, the passage from Bodhisattva to be to Buddha, is the initiation rite which is parallel to the general order of the rite of passage : the seperation, the transition (or liminal period) and the incorporation. Bodhisattva thus is a liminal persona. His 10 principles practice, therefore, is the liminal persona's attributes comprising with the renuciation of earthly-life, the acceptance of pain and suffering and the foolishness. Simultaneously, sexual continence and "communitas" in the Bodhisattva's ascetic community are the attributes of liminal period. Both causes of passage and the wordly lives' liminal phase are primarily conditioned by Buddhist philosophy.
