Abstract

The main purpose of this thesis is to study the tone systems and the phonetic characteristics of the tones of Nyo spoken in Amphoe Muang, Sakon Nakhon, and in Amphoe Tha U Then and Amphoe NaWa, Nakhon Phanom. In the study of the tones of Nyo in these provinces, the researcher has analysed the phonetic characteristics of the tones in each tambon, utilizing sound spectrograms. The Nyo dialects are then classified according to tonal systems and tone splits and the geographical boundaries of these dialects are determined. The analysis is based on linguistic data collected in interviews of twenty-six villagers selected as representatives of the Nyo speakers in the aforementioned amphoes. Phonetically speaking, the Nyo tones in the twenty-six tambons are so distinctively different from each other that they produce twenty-six accents. These accents can be divided into three major dialects based on tonal systems, namely four-tone, and five-tone, and six-tone systems. In addition, they can be divided into seven sub-groups based on tone splits.

ผลของการวิจัยแสดงว่า เสียงวรรณยุกต์ในภาษาญ้อทั้ง 26 ตำบล มีลักษณะทางสัทศาสตร์แตกต่างกันอย่างเห็นได้ชัด ทำให้เกิดสำเนียงญ้อทั้งสิ้น 26 สำเนียง และสำเนียงญ้อทั้งหมดนี้ยังสามารถแบ่งกลุ่มภาษาถิ่นย่อยของภาษาญ้อ โดยใช้จำนวนหน่วยเสียงวรรณยุกต์เป็นหลักได้ 3 ภาษาถิ่นย่อย คือภาษาถิ่นย่อยที่มีระบบ 4 หน่วยเสียงวรรณยุกต์ ภาษาถิ่นย่อยที่มีระบบ 5 หน่วยเสียงวรรณยุกต์ และภาษาถิ่นย่อยที่มีระบบ 6 หน่วยเสียงวรรณยุกต์ นอกจากนี้แล้วถ้าแบ่งตามลักษณะการแยกเสียงวรรณยุกต์ ก็จะได้ภาษาญ้อย่อยเป็น 7 กลุ่ม
