Abstract

The main purpose of this thesis is to study the phonology of Phlou (a Pwo Karen dialect) as spoken at Ban Nasuan, Khaochote subdistrict, Si Sawat district, Kanchanaburi province. This thesis includes the phonological descriptions of the consonants, the vowels and the tones of the language under study. The result of the research reveals that the phonological system of the language under study comprises twenty consonants which may be combined into thirty two-consonant clusters and eleven three-consonant clusters; thirty vowels which may be classified into 2 structure types, viz. seventeen simple and thirteen clusters, and into three voice-quality types, viz. plain, glottalized and nasalized; and four tones comprising two level tones and two falling tones.

ผลของการวิจัยปรากฎว่า ระบบเสียงของภาษาโผล่ว ประกอบด้วยหน่วยเสียงพยัญชนะ 20 หน่วยเสียง ซึ่งอาจจะปรากฎร่วมกันเป็นเสียงพยัญชนะประสมของเสียง จำนวน 30 เสียงและเสียงพยัญชนะประสมสามเสียง จำนวน 11 เสียง หน่วยเสียงสระ 30 หน่วยเสียง ซึ่งแบ่งตามลักษณะโครงสร้าง (structure type) ของเสียงได้ 2 ประเภทคือ หน่วยเสียงสระเดี่ยว จำนวน 17 หน่วยเสียงและหน่วยเสียงสระประสมจำนวน 17 หน่วยเสียง และหน่วยเสียงสระทั้งสองประเภทแบ่งตามคุณสมบัติของเสียงออกเป็น 3 ลักษณะคือ หน่วยเสียงสระธรรมดา หน่วยเสียงสระกับเส้นเสียง และหน่วยเสียงสระนาสิก หน่วยเสียงวรรณยุกต์ 4 หน่วยเสียง ซึ่งแบ่งออกเป็น 2 ประเภทคือ หน่วยเสียงวรรณยุกต์ระดับ 2 หน่วยเสียง และหน่วยเสียงวรรณยุกต์ตก 2 หน่วยเสียง
