Abstract

Presents a comparative study of the linguistic realization of yes-no questions translating from English text to Thai, focusing on English version of "the Rage of Angels" by Sydney Sheldon which was translated in Thai by chamnien Hemmarat. Uses semantic criteria to identify yes-no questions in English and Thai. Concludes from the study that semantic criteria can be used in a comparison of yes-no questions in both languages; in the linguistic realization of yes-no questions in the two languages, there is no one-to-one correspondence; and the differences of yes-no question in Thai and in English are that in Thai are marked by question particles attached to prepositions but in English are linguistically realized through structural devices. Points out that for each of the semantic criteria of yes-no questions, there are more than one linguistic realization; and in both languages, intonation and paralinguistics can have an over-riding effect on the meaning of yes-no questions
