Abstract

The study investigates lexical variation in the Thai dialects spoken in Rayong, Chantaburi and Trat. A questionnaire consisting of 60 semantic units was sent to every district in the three provinces. They were answered by either district officers or headmasters of district schools. Of the questionnaires, 81.33 percent were returned. This study differs from many of the previous studies of lexical variation in Thai dialects in that it does not include lexical annalysis. All of the words representing a semantic unit are displayed on a map with one symbol for each word. There is one map for each semantic unit. The next step is to display the most frequently used word or words in each district with a large symbol for each such word on the map. The last step is to examine the maps for word clusters. It is found that for 36 semantic units the words used in the sub-dialects of Rayong, Chantaburi, and Trat are the same. The remaining 24 semantic units show that there are three major sub-dialects, Rayong, Chantaburi, and Trat, and four minor sub-dialects, Amphoe Pong Nam Ron, Amphoe Pluak Daeng, Amphoe Muang Chantaburi, and Amphoe Muang Trat.

ในงานวิจัยนี้พบว่าหน่วยอรรถ 36 หน่วยอรรถ แสดงความคล้ายคลึงของการใช้คำในภาษาไทยถิ่นจังหวัดระยอง จันทบุรี และตราด ส่วนที่เหลืออีก 24 หน่วยอรรถ แสดงการจำแนกภาษาไทยถิ่นในบริเวณที่ศึกษาออกเป็นภาษาถิ่นย่อยระดับจังหวัด 3 ภาษา ได้แก่ ภาษาไทยถิ่นระยอง ภาษาไทยถิ่นจันทบุรี และภาษาไทยถิ่นตราด และภาษาถิ่นย่อยระดับอำเภอ 4 ภาษา ได้แก่ ภาษาถิ่นย่อยโป่งน้ำร้อน ภาษาถิ่นย่อยปลวกแดง ภาษาถิ่นย่อยอำเภอเมืองจันทบุรี และภาษาถิ่นย่อยอำเภอเมืองตราด
