| Abstract |
The main purpose of
this study is to investigate variation in Thai Navy officers' pronunciation
of final alveolar fricatives in English loanwords. The social variables
that are expected to play an important role in the variation are the speakers'
sex, age and experience abroad. The prestigious variant that appears in
the finding is the voiceless alveolar fricative (S). It is used twice as
much as the voiceless alveolar stop (t). The prominent social variable
that plays an important role in this variation is the speakers' experience
abroad. This study shows that the Thai voiceless alveolar fricative (S),
which normally occur in the initial position, is developing another function;
that is, being used as a final consonant in Thai. This thesis is the beginning
of a study of change in progress of consonants in Thai. There are other
Thai consonants which may be in the process of change in progress. They
were suggested in the last chapter of this thesis |
