Abstract

The main purpose of this rerearch is to do a contrastive study of the intonation in English and Thai considering intonation as an interrelated system. The study also predicts problems which may occur when Thais speak English and suggests a pedagogical approach in teaching English intonation to Thai which may solve the problems predicted. The contrastive analysis indicates that there are elements that English and Thai share. They are Tone Group, Tonic and Tune. There is one significant element in Thai intonation that English doesn't have, that is, tone. The five tones in Thai have a strong interference to the pronunciation of English. Moreover Tonality, Tonicity and Tune System in Thai and English are different. This contrastive study predicts the problems of Thai speaking English in terms of the division of rhythmic units and tone groups, the placement of tonic, and the assignment of tune to an utterance. Pedagogically speaking, intonation which is a complex interrelated system should be introduced to students first as one system of tonality, then gradually add other systems i.e. tonicity and tune appropriately. The students should find out the relationship between the variation in meaning and these systems through exercises which are carefully arranged
 

วัตถุประสงค์ของวิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้ คือการศึกษาเปรียบเทียบต่างทำนองเสียงภาษาอังกฤษและภาษาไทย ที่ศึกษาไว้โดยใช้ทฤษฎีระบบร่วม (interrelated system) การทำนายปัญหาที่อาจเกิดกับคนไทยในการใช้ทำนองเสียงภาษาอังกฤษ และการเสนอแนวการสอนทำนองเสียงภาษาอังกฤษที่อาจจะสามารถป้องกันและแก้ไขปัญหาเหล่านั้น

ผลการวิเคราะห์เปรียบต่างพบว่า ทำนองเสียงในภาษาไทยนอกจากจะมีองค์ประกอบต่าง ๆ เช่นเดียวกับทำนองเสียงในภาษาอังกฤษ ซึ่งได้แก่ หน่วยทำนอง (Tone Group) หน่วยสำคัญ (Tonic) และทำนองสูงต่ำ (Tune) แล้ว ยังมีวรรณยุกต์ (Tone) ซึ่งเป็นเสียงสูงต่ำประจำพยางค์ ขณะที่ในภาษาอังกฤษไม่มี วรรณยุกต์ทั้ง 5 ในภาษาไทยจะแทรกแซงในการพูดภาษาอังกฤษของคนไทย

นอกจากนี้ ระบบการแบ่งความ (Tonality) การปรากฎหน่วยสำคัญ (Tonicity) และทำนองสูงต่ำในภาษาไทยและภาษาอังกฤษยังแตกต่างกัน จากความต่างนี้ทำให้สามารถทำนายปัญหาที่อาจเกิดกับคนไทยเมื่อพูดภาษาอังกฤษได้ว่าคนไทยจะแบ่งข้อความออกเป็นหน่วยความ ลงเสียงหนักพิเศษ และใช้ทำนองสูงต่ำไปจากเจ้าของภาษา

ในการสอนทำนองเสียงภาษาอังกฤษให้แก่คนไทยนั้น ควรสอนให้ผู้เรียนคุ้นเคยกับองค์ประกอบต่าง ๆ ในทำนองเสียงทีละระบบ โดยเริ่มจากระบบการแบ่งความการปรากฏหน่วยสำคัญและทำนองสูงต่ำตามลำดับ ส่วนกฎเกณฑ์ความเกี่ยวข้องกันขององค์ประกอบต่าง ๆ กับความหมายนั้นควรให้ผู้เรียนได้สรุปด้วยตัวเองจากบทฝึกที่ได้ลำดับขั้นตอนไว้อย่างดี
