Abstract

This thesis aims to study participant references in Mien narrative discourses. The study is based on the data corpus of five Mien folk-tales. The pruposes of the study are to classify the type of references, to investigate the condition on usage of each type and also to stydy characteristics of these references. The result of the analysis shows that participant references can be classified into two types: zero or covert reference and overt reference. Overt reference can be subclassified into three types: repetition, substitution and demonstrative reference. Frequency of occurence is in this descending order: zero reference, substitution, repetition and demonstrative reference. Condition on usage can be divided into two types: linguistic condition and participant condition. Linguistic condition is subdivided into three types: syntactic condition, semantic condition and discourse condition. Participant condition is also subdivided into two types: number of participants in a tale and rank of participants. The various conditions which determine the choice of reference, in addition, show that the choice depends on characteristics of each reference and the conditions posed in each case
