Abstract

The study focuses on the emergence of words representing new political and administrative concepts during the reigns of king Rama IV-VII as well as the usage and evolution of these words. A distinction can be made between two types of words: those representing Western political concepts and those which do not. Four methods are discovered for the formation of these words: new coinage, borrowing, calquing and semantic borrowing. New coinage is found among words which do not represent Western political concepts. The other three methods are used for words which represent new political concepts borrowed from the West. The choice of these methods varies in the different reigns. The use of these words shows four types of evolution: the adoption of existing words retaining the original meaning, adoption of existing words but changing their meaning, coining of new words for existing concepts and obsolescence of some words
