Abstract |
The dissertation has two purposes : to investigate the sound symbolic system in Tai Nuea and to prove that the system is universal. The investigation is based on a corpus of i deophones. The study first deals with the formal characteristics and the classification of Tai Nuea ideophones. Syntactically, they are verb modifiers but different from adverbs in some respects. They can be classified into 5 categories according tot the modes of sensory perception they describe, or 2 categories according to the number of syllable. Then, the system of sound symbloism is analyzed. It is found that all the phonological components of ideophones cooperatively convey meanings. The initial and final consonants convey the manner of movement or quality of things; the vowels convey size, shape and degree of intensity; the tones augment or diminish the degree of intensity and the reduplications intensify of convey the plurality of the movement or the number of things. Lastly, the phonetic motivations for relating sound and meanings were investigated and the sound symbolic system in Tai Nuea was proved to be universal to some extent |

วิทยานิพนธ์นี้มีจุดประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาระบบสัทอรรถลักษณะในภาษาไทเหนือ และเพื่อพิสูจน์ความเป็นสากลของระบบสัทอรรถลักษณะในภาษาดังกล่าว ข้อมูลที่นำมาศึกษาได้แก่ คำแสดงภาพลักษณ์ ส่วนแรกของการศึกษาเป็นการศึกษาลักษณะและประเภทของคำแสดงภาพลักษณ์ ลักษณะทางวากยสัมพันธ์ของคำแสดงภาพลักษณ์คือ ทำหน้าที่ขยายกริยา แต่ก็แตกต่างจากคำกริยาวิเศษณ์ทั่วไปในบางลักษณะ คำแสดงภาพลักษณ์อาจจำแนกออกได้เป็น 2 ประเภท ตามจำนวนพยางค์หรือจำแนกออกได้เป็น 5 ประเภท ตามลักษณะการรับรู้ทางประสาทสัมผัส ส่วนต่อมาเป็นการศึกษาระบบสัทอรรถลักษณะ พบว่าส่วนประกอบทุกส่วนของคำแสดงภาพลักษณ์ล้วนสื่อความหมายทั้งสิ้น โดยพยัญชนะต้นและพยางค์ท้ายแสดงลักษณะการเคลื่อนไหวหรือคุณสมบัติของสิ่งของ สระแสดงขนาด รูปร่างและระดับมากน้อย วรรณยุกต์เพิ่มหรือลดระดับมากน้อย การซ้ำแสดงการเน้นและแสดงพจน์ของการเคลื่อนไหวหรือสิ่งของ ส่วนสุดท้ายเป็นการให้เหตุผลทางสัทศาสตร์ที่อาจนำมาอธิบายการที่เสียงแสดงความหมาย พบว่ามีเหตุผลที่อธิบายได้ และได้พิสูจน์ความเป็นสากลของสัทอรรถลักษณะในภาษาไทเหนือ พบว่ามีความเป็นสากลเป็นบางส่วน |
