Abstract This thesis aims at producing a language map of Prachin Buri and Sa Kaeo provinces based on the use of lexical items. As it is expected that both Central Thai and Thai Korat which use the same lexical items will be found in the area, a tonal study is included to separate the two dialects. Data collection was carried out by post. The questionnaire used contains 30 semantic units and 20 pairs of words for checking tonal splits between the Bl-Cl, Cl - C2 and C3 - C4 boxes. The questionnaires were sent to the principals of 116 schools under the Provincial Elementary Education Offices. 89.65 percent of the total number of questionnaires was returned. The results show that four languages, namely, Central Thai, Northeastern Thai, Thai Korat and Khmer, are spoken in Prachin Buri and Sa Kaeo. These languages are used in the largest to the smallest areas as follow : 1. the Northeastern Thai area covers most of the area of both provinces ; 2. the Central Thai area covers most of the west of Prachin Buri ; 3. the Central Thai-Northeastern Thai area comprises 6 tambons in Prachin Buri and 9 tambons in Sa Kaeo ; 4. the Thai Korat area comprises 2 tambons in Wattana Nakhon district, Sa Kaeo province ; 5. the Khmer area comprises 2 tambons in Ta Phraya district, Sa Kaeo province (these 2 tambons are located near the Thailand-Combodia borders) ; and 6. the Central Thai-Khmer area comprises only 1 tambon in Ta Phraya district, Sa Kaeo province
