Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration.
  • The submission file are in both 1) OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document, AND 2) pdf file formats.
  • The length of the submission should not exceed 7,000 words (or 14 A4 pages with single space), including the footnotes and references.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • Any paper written by a non-native speaker of English must be checked by a native speaker for its grammaticality before submission.
  • An abstract no longer than 150 words is provided, together with up to 5 or 6 keywords (for research article only).

Author Guidelines

Submission

Authors wishing to submit a paper to MANUSYA should submit an electronic copy online by logging in our submission system. 

 

Language

All submissions must be in English. Authors must ensure that their articles are written in good academic English. Prior to submission, authors whose first language is not English are must have their manuscripts proofread by professional editing services. 

Length

The length of the submission should not exceed 7,000 words (or 14 A4 pages with single space in a 12-point font), including the footnotes and references. 

Font

The preferred font is the Brill (https://brill.com/page/290?language=en), but other unicode fonts such as Times New Roman, or Calibri are acceptable. Please let us know in advance if you plan to use any special characters or fonts.

 

Submission Requirements

General

Formatting should be kept to a minimum. Only use italics in your files to format the text which has to be typeset as italics. Indent paragraphs with one tab. Authors should include their home or institutional address, fax number, phone number and email address on a separate sheet.

Abstract and Keywords

Authors are requested to provide an abstract of 150 words or less at the beginning of the article, as well as up to 5 or 6 keywords. The abstract summarizes the aim, result and conclusion of the research. Do not provide an abstract for a book review.

Footnotes

Use footnotes, not endnotes.

 References

Please provide a separate list of references at the end of your article. Please refer to The Chicago Manual of Style (chicagomanualofstyle.org). At the end of journal references, please insert the DOI number, whenever available.

 Figures

Illustrations are to be delivered as separate files (TIFF or JPG) with a resolution of at least 300 dpi together with the manuscript in final form for printing. Never send photocopies. Originals can be returned to the author upon request. All illustrations must be numbered clearly. All captions are to be added on a separate sheet, at the end of the article.

 

Thematic issues

We welcome proposals for thematic collections of papers on humanities topics of current interests to researchers in Southeast Asia. Please contact us by email for information on how to prepare a proposal.

 

Publication 

Proofs

Upon acceptance, the authors will be asked to edit and format their manuscript in accordance with our stylesheet and the editor’s recommendations.  Subsequently, a PDF of the article proofs will be sent to the author by email to check carefully for factual and typographic errors. Authors are responsible for checking these proofs and are strongly urged to make use of the Comment & Markup toolbar to note their corrections directly on the proofs.  At this stage in the production process only minor corrections are allowed. Alterations to the original manuscript at this stage will result in considerable delay in publication and, therefore, are not accepted unless charged to the author. Proofs should be returned to the Editor.

Offprints

A PDF file of the article will be supplied free of charge by the publisher to authors for personal use. Information about authors’ self-archiving rights can be found at Brill’s website (brill.com/resources/authors/publishing-books-brill/self-archiving-rights).

 

Consent to Publish

Transfer of Copyright

By submitting a manuscript, the author agrees that the copyright for the article is transferred to the publisher if and when the article is accepted for publication. For that purpose the author needs to sign the Consent to Publish which will be sent with the first proofs of the manuscript. 

Open Access

Should the author wish to publish the article in Open Access he/she can choose the Brill Open option. This allows for non-exclusive Open Access publication under a Creative Commons license in exchange for an Article Publication Charge (APC), upon signing a special Brill Open Consent to Publish Form.

Publication fee

Thanks to Chulalongkorn University's Office of Research Affairs, MANUSYA, Journal of Humanities is able to maintain the free-publication policy. Authors are not charged for the publication of their articles.
