Interested people may view the project plan at\u00a0http:\/\/www.princessmcs.org<\/p>\n<p>This research project focuses on applying facial recognition technology\u00a0to enhance access\u00a0to\u00a0a biographical\u00a0digitized image collection with the study of Oral history. This presentation is presented in Panel style in cooperation with leading professors from the School of Library and Information Science in Croatia under the topic &#8220;Digital Curation Projects and Research in Asia&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This research project receives funding from Academics Division of Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University, Department of Library Science Professor Suthilak Ambhanwong\u2019s\u00a0Fund, and Honorary Consul of Zagreb, Croatia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0e1a\u0e17\u0e04\u0e31\u0e14\u0e22\u0e48\u0e2d\/Abstract<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the major challenges of digitizing images from various amateur sources is a variety of metadata creation practices.\u00a0 While some sources may apply an exhaustive approach to describe images in their collections, some provide only a small amount of annotations and\/or very brief captions.\u00a0 The later practice seems to be more common among Thai amateur image collectors. \u00a0Non-textual information (e.g., persons, objects, and locations) becomes a key element in providing access to biographical digital image collections.\u00a0 While major open source repository platforms have yet integrated and\/or developed ways to process non-textual information, particularly metadata identifying persons in an image.\u00a0 Thus, we utilized facial recognition feature in Google\u2019s Picasa software to create metadata in identifying persons in a biographical digitized image collection, princessmcs.org collection.\u00a0 To commemorate the 60th Birthday Anniversary of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, we have collected 2,516 digitized photos representing Her Majesty\u2019s relationship with the Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University, her alma mater, since 1973.\u00a0 Because most of the photographs in the collection contain less or no description, we implemented oral history approach by arranging 9 rounds of group interviews with Her Royal Highness\u2019 classmates, friends, faculty members and staff members.\u00a0 There are fourteen participants in total from all 9 rounds.\u00a0 These participants narrated the stories as well as identified person names in sample images.\u00a0 Both participants and sample images were selected purposively in order to maximize the efficiency of the identification of persons in the collection. \u00a0The sample images were uploaded to Picasa with all other images.\u00a0 We used the facial recognition feature to group faces that are similar.\u00a0 The person names given in Picasa were then mapped to Persons element in a Dublin-Core-based repository, operated by Omeka version 2.3.\u00a0 In total, we identified 583 persons in the collection.\u00a0 In this paper, we evaluated the performance of facial recognition technology in generating metadata as well as discussed the benefits and drawbacks of this application in a biographical digitized photography collection.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Professor\u00a0Songphan Choemprayong, Ph.D. introduced an academic work under the topic &#8220;Applying facial recognition technology\u00a0to enhance access\u00a0to\u00a0a biographical\u00a0digitized image collection: A case study of princessmcs.org collection&#8221; in an Academic conference &#8220;Libraries in the Digital Age (LIDA 2016) at Zadar University, Croatia,<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":137,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-280","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-1"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.arts.chula.ac.th\/libsci\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/280","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.arts.chula.ac.th\/libsci\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.arts.chula.ac.th\/libsci\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.arts.chula.ac.th\/libsci\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/137"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.arts.chula.ac.th\/libsci\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=280"}],"version-history":[{"count":5,"href":"https:\/\/www.arts.chula.ac.th\/libsci\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/280\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":783,"href":"https:\/\/www.arts.chula.ac.th\/libsci\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/280\/revisions\/783"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.arts.chula.ac.th\/libsci\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=280"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.arts.chula.ac.th\/libsci\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=280"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.arts.chula.ac.th\/libsci\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=280"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
