History of the Chinese Section
The Faculty of Arts offered a
Chinese course as an elective course in 1973. In 1977, the course was developed
into a minor course, and eventually became a major course in a B.A. program in
1981[1]
under the supervision of the Chinese Section.
In 1997, coupled with the assistance
from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, Peking Univeristy, the faculty offered
a master’s degree program in Chinese Language and Literature, considered the
country’s first M.A. program in Chinese Language. The Chinese Section was supported
by the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, Peking Univeristy, with their instructors to
assist in teaching. Futhermore, the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, provided our
students with consultant teachers to help them with their dissertation
throughout the period of research and data collection at Peking University.
Later, in 2004, the faculty offered another M.A. program in Chinese as a
Foreign Language so as to meet the country’s needs for lecturers in response to
an increase of Chinese studying. (The program is no longer available.)
As universities in Thailand were
either increasingly offering M.A. programs in Chinese Language or in the
process of planning on such programs, the Faculty of Arts started offering a
Ph.D. program in Chinese Language in 2009, realising that Ph.D. instructors
were required for teaching Chinese in certain institutes. The program is the
first Chinese Ph.D. program in Thailand established in order to produce
instructors with specialised Chinese skills and in-depth knowledge in Chinese
literature and culture. With such proficiency, they are able to contribute to
an innovative body of knowledge which fits into the way Chinese skills and
literature are taught in Thailand. This not only helps reduce the cost of
sending instructors to pursue a doctoral degree abroad, but also makes a
greater stride in teaching Chinese to achieve a world-class standard.
Apart
from the bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and doctoral degree programs, the
section is now offering free elective courses for students with other majors
and other faculties. The section has also been assisting the Faculty of
Education where a Teaching Chinese program is offered, with courses concerning
Chinese skills and knowledge since its establishment in 2014.
[1] Special

Darani Montrisuwat, Wittaya Jirotkul, Sujit Supannawat, Buranee Hunapatet, Yuwadee Deekaona, and
Somchai Sukakarnka.
