คำอ้างถึงเป็นเรื่องที่ได้รับความสนใจอย่างมากในการศึกษาในสาขาวากยสัมพันธ์ วัจนปฏิบัติศาสตร์ การวิเคราะห์สัมพันธสาร และภาษาศาสตร์จิตวิทยา ลักษณะการปรากฏของคำอ้างถึงแตกต่างกันไปตามข้อกำหนดในแต่ละภาษา จะเห็นได้ว่าในขณะที่ภาษาในเอเชียหลาย ๆ ภาษา เช่น ภาษาไทยและภาษาญี่ปุ่น มีรูปคำอ้างถึงที่เป็นคำนาม สรรพนาม หรือไม่ปรากฏรูป ภาษาอังกฤษมีรูปคำอ้างถึงที่เป็นคำนามและสรรพนาม แต่การไม่ปรากฏรูปคำอ้างถึงนั้นมีจำนวนน้อย เนื่องจากคำอ้างถึงในภาษาไทยมีความหลากหลาย การศึกษาคำอ้างถึงจึงมีความน่าสนใจและสามารถศึกษาได้ในหลายแง่มุม เช่น ในเรื่องของการเข้าใจและตีความคำอ้างถึง และการศึกษาเปรียบเทียบข้ามภาษา เป็นต้น
โครงการวิเคราะห์ 'คำอ้างถึง' เชิงภาษาศาสตร์จิตวิทยาและการเปรียบเทียบข้ามภาษา ต้องการศึกษาคำอ้างถึงในแง่มุมที่กล่าวข้างต้น โดยโครงการนี้แบ่งออกเป็นสองโครงการย่อย โครงการแรกเป็นการศึกษาการทำความเข้าใจประโยคที่มีคำอ้างถึงในรูปต่าง ๆ ของผู้พูดภาษาไทย ส่วนโครงการย่อยที่สองเป็นการศึกษาเปรียบเทียบการใช้คำอ้างถึงในงานวรรณกรรมแปลจากภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาญี่ปุ่นและภาษาไทย เพื่อวิเคราะห์ว่าหากเปรียบเทียบการใช้คำอ้างถึงในบริบทเดียวกันในสามภาษานี้ รูปคำอ้างถึงจะแตกต่างกันอย่างไร
The study of referential terms has received a great deal of attention in the fields of syntax, pragmatics, discourse analysis and psycholinguistics. In the world's languages, the range of possible forms varies depending on language-specific constraints. It can be observed that while many Asian languages, such as Thai and Japanese, have lexical, pronominal and null forms, referential terms in English are usually in lexical or pronominal forms, and null forms are relatively rare. As Thai has a rich referential system, the study of Thai referential terms is interesting and can be investigated in different aspects, such as the comprehension and interpretation of referential terms and their patterns compared to those in other languages.
The project "A psycholinguistic analysis and a cross-linguistic study of 'referential terms'" consists of two parts. The first part is an experimental study concerning Thai speakers' comprehension of sentences containing different types of referential forms. The second part is a contrastive study of referential forms in an English short story, compared with its Japanese and Thai translations. The goal is to find similarities and differences between referential terms in these three languages in a comparable context.

ผลการวิจัยจะเพิ่มความรู้เกี่ยวกับการทำความเข้าใจและประมวลผลคำอ้างถึงแบบต่างๆ ของผู้พูดภาษาไทย ซึ่งยังไม่มีการศึกษามาก่อน และเป็นการสร้างองค์ความรู้ใหม่ในการศึกษาภาษาไทยในเชิงภาษาศาสตร์จิตวิทยา อีกทั้งการเปรียบเทียบคำอ้างถึงข้ามภาษาจะทำให้เห็นลักษณะที่ภาษาต่างๆ มีร่วมกันและลักษณะเฉพาะของแต่ละภาษา ในภาพรวม ผลการศึกษาจากโครงการนี้จะทำให้เห็นลักษณะเฉพาะของคำอ้างถึงในภาษาไทย ซึ่งความรู้และความเข้าใจเกี่ยวกับคำอ้างถึงในภาษาไทยนี้สามารถนำไปประยุกต์ใช้ในการเรียนการสอนภาษาไทยในฐานะที่เป็นภาษาแม่และที่เป็นภาษาต่างประเทศ และนำไปพัฒนาการเขียนตำราไวยากรณ์ไทยได้อีกด้วย
The findings will contribute to the study of the comprehension and processing of different types of referential terms in Thai, which has not yet been disclosed. The research is also a study of the Thai language from the psycholinguistic viewpoint. Moreover, a cross-linguistic contrastive study of referential terms will reveal universal properties among languages as well as language-specific properties. In general, this work will add to the understanding of referential terms in Thai and its findings could be applied in the teaching of Thai as a first and second language as well as the compilation of a Thai grammar.
