ภาษาไทยถือเป็นเอกลักษณ์ที่สำคัญของชาติไทย แม้ว่าประเทศไทยจะประกอบด้วยกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์หลากหลาย หลายกลุ่มก็มีภาษาเป็นของตนเอง แต่ภาษาไทยก็เป็นภาษากลางที่ชาวไทยกลุ่มต่าง ๆ ใช้สื่อสารกันมาเป็นเวลาแล้วอย่างน้อย 700 ปี ดังที่พบจารึกภาษาไทยสมัยอาณาจักรสุโขทัยและอาณาจักรอยุธยาจำนวนมากกระจายอยู่ตามภูมิภาคต่าง ๆ ของประเทศ นอกจากนี้ยังมีวรรณคดีโบราณภาษาไทยอีกหลายเรื่องที่ยังคงสืบทอดกันมาจนถึงทุกวันนี้ อย่างไรก็ตาม ในปัจจุบันยังขาดความรู้ความเข้าใจเกี่ยวกับวิวัฒนาการของภาษาไทย นับเป็นอุปสรรคในการศึกษาจารึกและวรรณคดีไทยโบราณ รวมถึงประวัติศาสตร์ก่อนสมัยอีกด้วย ดังนั้นการศึกษาภาษาไทยจากมุมมองทางภาษาศาสตร์เชิงประวัติจึงมีความเป็นอย่างยิ่งในการทำความเข้าใจสังคม การเมือง และวัฒนธรรมของชาติไทย
โครงการนี้มุ่งศึกษาวิวัฒนาการของระบบคำปฏิเสธในภาษาไทย โดยการผสมผสานความรู้ด้านประวัติศาสตร์และประวัติวรรณคดีไทยกับวิธีการวิเคราะห์ภาษาจากมุมมองทางภาษาศาสตร์เชิงประวัติ (historical linguistics) โดยยกวิวัฒนาการระบบการบอกปฏิเสธในภาษาไทยมาเป็นกรณีศึกษา ในการศึกษาเอกสารทางประวัติศาสตร์และวรรณคดีโบราณพบว่า ภาษาไทยสมัยสุโขทัยและอยุธยามีระบบการบอกปฏิเสธ ที่ต่างไปจากภาษาไทยปัจจุบัน ที่เห็นได้ชัดคือ มีการใช้คำบอกปฏิเสธ (negators) ที่ไม่พบในภาษาไทยปัจจุบัน เช่น บ่ มิ บ่มิ ไป่ ห่อน เป็นต้น นอกจากนี้ยังมีการใช้หน่วยสร้างแสดงปฏิเสธ (negative construction) ที่ต่างไปจากภาษาไทยปัจจุบันด้วย เช่น หา+(คำกริยา)+มิได้ เป็นต้น เนื่องจากการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางภาษามีความสัมพันธ์อย่างใกล้ชิดกับการเปลี่ยนแปลงด้านสังคมและความนึกคิดของผู้พูด วิวัฒนาการของระบบการบอกปฏิเสธในภาษาไทยจึงย่อมจะสะท้อนให้เห็นความเปลี่ยนแปลงในทางประวัติศาสตร์ไทยด้วย จึงกล่าวได้ว่าโครงการนี้เป็นการศึกษาประวัติภาษาไทยในฐานะบันทึกประวัติศาสตร์ชาติ อันเป็นองค์ประกอบสำคัญในการส่งเสริมให้เกิดความมั่นคงของคนในชาติ
The Thai language is an important part of Thai national identity. Even though Thailand consists of various ethnic groups with their own languages, Thai has been regarded as the lingual franca and has been used for communication among people for at least 700 years. The importance of Thai is attested by Sukhothai and Ayutthaya inscriptions found in many regions of the country. It is also made evident by a number of ancient literary works which have been preserved until our time. However, we still have little knowledge of the historical development of Thai. This is a major obstacle for in-depth research of Thai epigraphy, literature and pre-history. Therefore, study of the Thai language from historical linguistic perspectives can bring about a better understanding of Thai society, politics and culture in the past.
This project studies the historical development of Thai negation by integrating history and literature with historical linguistics perspectives, using the system of negation in Thai as a case study. In ancient Thai literature, the systems of negation of the Sukhothai and the Ayuttaya periods were markedly different from that of modern Thai. A number of negative words used in ancient Thai, including บ่ มิ บ่มิ ไป่ ห่อน, are not found in modern Thai. In addition, some negative constructions such as หา + (คำกริยา) + มิได้ which are rarely found nowadays were abundant in ancient texts. As we know, language change relates to changes in society and the speaker's mind. The development of the Thai negation system can thus reflect change in Thai history as a whole. This project is, thus, a study of Thai as a national historical record. The findings of the study will play an important role in promoting the security of the people of Thailand.
