Brief Introduction to the Confucius Institute at Chulalongkorn University

The Confucius Institute at Chulalongkorn University , Thailand (CICU in short) was established jointly by Chulalongkorn University (CU) and Peking University (PKU). It is located at Chulalongkorn University , in the heart of Bangkok , Thailand . Its main office is situated on the second floor of the Maha Chulalongkorn Building , a building with traditional architectural style. The CICU receives support from both HANBAN and the Embassy of the People's Republic of China , Thailand . Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, in particular, has paid great attention to the Institute all along.

The signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to jointly establish Confucius Institute between CU and PKU was held at Peking University on April 4, 2006 . In attendance at the ceremony were: H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand , Professor Xu Zhihong, President of PKU, and Professor Zhao Guocheng, Deputy Director of Hanban. On December 18, 2006 Professor Khunying Suchada Kiranandana and Professor Xu Zhihong, Presidents of CU and PKU respectively, signed the “Agreement on the Establishment of the CICU between CU and PKU.”

H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn uncovered the plate at the opening ceremony of the CICU, Thailand.

The opening ceremony of the CICU, Thailand was held at Chulalongkorn University on March 26, 2007 . H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn was in attendance to uncover CICU's plate, along with H.E. Zhang Jiuhuan, China 's Embassador to the Kingdom of Thailand and Professor Yang He, Vice President of PKU. The CICU, Thailand held its first general meeting of the members of the Executive Council at Chulalongkorn University during August 6-8, 2007 . Professor Zhang Guoyou, Vice President of PKU, and the PKU delegation were also granted an audience with H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. China 's Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Education, H.E. Zhang Xinsheng, paid a visit to the CICU while in Bangkok as well.

 

     H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn using a Chinese brush inscribed an epigraph for the CICU.          

10.	H.E. Zhang Xinsheng, China’s Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Education, paid a visit to the CICU.     


 

Organizations

A. Members of the Executive Council:

The first Executive Council of the CICU, Thailand consists of seven members, four appointees from CU and three appointees from PKU. Associate Professor Werasak Udomkichdecha, Ph.D. and Professor Zhang Guoyou were named the Chairperson and Vice Chairperson of the first meeting of the Executive Council of the CICU respectively. Below is the name list of the current appointed Council members from both parties:

(4) Lecturer Suree Choonharuangdej, Ph.D. Head, Chinese Section, Chulalongkorn University

PKU's Committee Members:

(1) Professor Zhang Guoyou/Professor Yang He Vice President, Peking University
(2) Professor Zhang Xiuhuan Director, Office of Hanban at Peking University
(3) Professor Fu Zengyou President of the Chinese side of the CICU,
Director, Sirindhorn Center for China-Thai Science Technology & Culture, Peking University

B. The Presidents of the CICU

The CICU implements the two-president system under the leadership of the Executive Council, appointing the Presidents of the Thai side of the CICU and the Presidents of the Chinese side of the CICU, both of whom will then take full responsibility for the Institute. The first two Presidents of the CICU are as follows:
-Assistant Professor Prapod Assavavirulhakarn, Ph.D. President of the Thai side of the CICU
