ในปี พ.ศ. 2478 ได้มีการก่อตั้ง “แผนกวิชาภูมิศาสตร์และประวัติศาสตร์” ขึ้นเป็นครั้งแรกของประเทศไทยสังกัดคณะอักษรศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย ตามพระราชบัญญัติจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย ปีพุทธศักราช 2477 จึงอาจกล่าวได้ว่า ภูมิศาสตร์ได้รับการยอมรับว่าเป็นสาขาวิชาที่มีการเรียนการสอนในระดับอุดมศึกษาอย่างเป็นทางการตั้งแต่บัดนั้นเป็นต้นมาถึงแม้ว่าในเชิงการบริหารยังสังกัดหน่วยงานเดียวกับสาขาวิชาประวัติศาสตร์ก็ตาม
ต่อมาปริมาณงานของแผนกวิชาภูมิศาสตร์และประวัติศาสตร์ได้เพิ่มมากขึ้นตามลำดับ โดยได้ให้บริการการสอนแก่นิสิตในคณะอักษรศาสตร์และคณะอื่นๆในมหาวิทยาลัยจำนวนมากกว่า 1,500 คนต่อปี นอกจากนี้ไม่ว่าจะเป็นสถาบันอุดมศึกษาในประเทศไทยหรือในต่างประเทศ การสอนและการค้นคว้าวิชาภูมิศาสตร์และวิชาประวัติศาสตร์จะแยกแผนกวิชาออกจากกัน อีกทั้งแต่ละสาขาวิชายังมีปรัชญา เนื้อหา เทคนิคหรือวิธีการศึกษาและแนวการวิจัยที่แตกต่างกันอีกด้วย ดังนั้นแผนกวิชาภูมิศาสตร์และประวัติศาสตร์ จึงได้แยกออกจากกันเป็น 2 แผนกวิชา คือ “แผนกวิชาภูมิศาสตร์” และ”แผนกวิชาประวัติศาสตร์” โดยแผนกวิชาภูมิศาสตร์ได้ถือเอาวันที่ 18 พฤษภาคม พศ. 2515 เป็นวันกำเนิดหรือวันก่อตั้งแผนกวิชา
ในปี พ.ศ.2522 ได้เปลี่ยนชื่อจาก “แผนกวิชาภูมิศาสตร์” เป็น “ภาควิชาภูมิศาสตร์” ตามพระราชบัญญัติจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย พ.ศ.2522 บุคคลที่มีบทบาทสำคัญในการดำเนินการแยกแผนกวิชาทั้งสองออกจากกัน ได้แก่ ศาสตราจารย์รอง ศยามานนท์ ศาสตราจารย์ไพฑูรย์ พงศะบุตร และศาสตราจารย์รัชนีกร บุญหลง โดยศาสตราจารย์ไพฑูรย์ พงศะบุตรได้ดำรงตำแหน่งหัวหน้าแผนกวิชาภูมิศาสตร์เป็นคนแรก และในขณะเดียวกันก็ดำรงตำแหน่งคณบดีคณะอักษรศาสตร์ในระยะเวลาเดียวกันด้วย (พ.ศ.2515-2519)
In 1935, the “Department of Geography and History” was established for the first time in Thailand under the Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University, according to the Chulalongkorn University Act, 1934. It can be said that Geography was officially recognized as an academic discipline since then, although it was administratively affiliated with the same department as the History department.
Subsequently, the workload of the Department of Geography and History increased progressively. It provided teaching services to a large number of students in the Faculty of Arts and other faculties in the university, totaling over 1,500 students per year. Moreover, whether in Thailand or abroad, both Geography and History departments were separated in terms of teaching and research. Each department had its own philosophy, content, techniques, study methods, and research approaches. Therefore, the Department of Geography and History was divided into two departments, namely the “Department of Geography” and the “Department of History.” The Department of Geography commemorated its establishment on May 18, 1972.
In 1979, the name was changed from the “Department of Geography” to the “Division of Geography” in accordance with the Chulalongkorn University Act, 1979. Key individuals played significant roles in the separation of the two departments, including Associate Professor Rong Siamarnthon, Associate Professor Phaitoon Phongsatorn, and Associate Professor Ratchanee Kongsilp. Associate Professor Phaitoon Phongsatorn served as the first head of the Department of Geography and concurrently held the position of the Dean of the Faculty of Arts during the same period (1972-1976).
