Abstract

This research aims to study the language situation in Singapore, both in the scope of linguistic landscape and translation. The study of linguistic landscapes provided us with a broad perspective of the language situation in Singapore. Signs from the government sector and public sector are analyzed through scripts as appearing on display. Our analysis gave an insight on the main language choice in different domains. On the other hand, the study of translations is our attempt to find the tendency of national languages, as compared to English, to appear in translated documents. If national languages are the main language used in document translations, it could be inferred that the national languages are considered more important in the education domain; however, if English is the main language, it implies an elevated status of English among Singaporeans.
