Welcome to the Chinese Section, Department of Eastern Languages, Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University

Our academics have expertise in diverse disciplines in Chinese Studies, including Chinese linguistics, semantics, syntax, comparison of Chinese and Thai languages, Chinese pedagogy (teaching Chinese as a foreign language), second language acquisition, classical Chinese literature, modern and contemporary Chinese literature and Chinese culture.

Our section offers the bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and doctoral degree programs. In the bachelor’s degree program, we teach both Modern Standard Chinese (Mandarin) and Classical Chinese. We aim to improve students’ listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, which are all essential to function with confidence in the Chinese-speaking world. To deliver a solid understanding of Chinese language, literature, culture and society, we also offer opportunities to study diverse courses such as Chinese Phonetics, Chinese Grammar, Evolution of the Chinese Characters, Chinese-Thai Translation, Thai-Chinese Translation, History of Chinese Literature, Modern and Contemporary Chinese Literature, Chinese culture, etc.

In the master’s degree and doctoral degree programs, we not only provide courses concerning Chinese linguistics and literature, but also support postgraduate students to conduct research in Chinese linguistics and literature, as well as other relevant fields in Chinese Studies.  

Furthermore, our section offers studying opportunities to students who do not major in Chinese but are interested in studying Chinese as their elective subjects. In addition, in partnership with Chulalongkorn University’s Academic Services Center of Arts, we offer Chinese courses for people outside the university.
