Abstract

In order to find out and empirically demonstrate the role of English and Vietnamese in modern Vietnam society, we have inspected the language data, both obtained from fieldworks and internet, from several different domains, law, media, education, literature, and politics, in the aspect of linguistic landscape, language use, and translation.

Before conducting a fieldwork, we have already explored the language situation in Vietnam so as to generally inform ourselves about the language situation in Vietnam, as well as make a decision about the data collecting process. Moreover, we have also contacted an interpreter and assistants which will be helping us during the fieldwork in Hanoi, during 8-14 November 2017. The information which is not available on the internet and during the fieldwork is collected after the fieldwork.

In this research report, we will explain the language situation in Vietnam from the past to the present. Then, we will demonstrate the results of each domain and conclude about language choice in Vietnam.
