Dr. Pavadee holds online talks considering gender and sexuality in Thai language

In recent weeks, Dr. Pavadee Saisuwan gave two online talks relating to the construction of gender and sexuality in Thai. The first, titled “Constructing gender and sexuality in Thai: Findings and observations from linguistic perspectives,” was given on , given on June 25, 2021 as part of the International Arts Talk series, organized by Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University. The second, titled “Viewing gender and sexuality through the Thai language,” took place on October, 19, 2021 and was hosted by the Inclusive Languages project, Department of Languages and World Literatures, The University of British Columbia.

In the talks, the construction of gender and sexuality by Thai speakers through various aspects of the Thai language was discussed. Dr. Saisuwan started the talk by discussing the idea of gender and sexuality in Thai society before proceeding to discuss ways in which Thai speakers refers to gender and sexual diversity as well as sexual identifies. She illustrates how Thai speakers creatively construct their gender identity through the limited means that exist in Thai language, e.g. pronouns, final particles, etc.
