Male Femininity, Citizenship, and Pride: Dr. Pavadee’s talk on LGBTQIA+ Activism in Bangkok

The Center of Excellence in Southeast Asian Linguistics (ChulaSEAL) is pleased to highlight Dr. Pavadee’s recent talk entitled “Male femininity, citizenship, and democracy in the linguistic landscape of a “pride” protest in Bangkok” as part of the SOAS South East Asia Seminar Series 2025 which took place on January 30, 2025.

Dr. Pavadee’s talk examined Bangkok’s first LGBTQIA+-led pro-democracy protest in 2020, which integrated Pride-like elements to reshape Thailand’s political discourse. With linguistic landscape approach, her study demonstrated how male femininity served as a symbolic resource for LGBTQIA+ visibility and political engagement. Furthermore, the analysis highlighted the role of linguistic landscapes in asserting sexual citizenship, challenging traditional gender norms, and aligning local activism with global Pride movements.

In addition to her talk, Dr. Pavadee has contributed a book chapter to “Pride in Asia: Negotiating Ideologies, Localness, and Alternative Futures”, co-authored with Benedict J. L. Rowlett, Christian Go, Li-Chi Chen, and Mie Hiramoto. This volume explores the diverse expressions of Pride across Asia, highlighting the negotiation of global and local LGBTQIA+ identities. The book is available for free download until February 14, 2025 here.
