The English Department offers a rigorous MA program with the objective of developing graduates with an in-depth knowledge of English language studies or English literature. The program is divided into two tracks—language and literature—and has two options: Plan A (Thesis) and Plan B (Comprehensive Exam). It provides a dynamic learning environment where students work closely with their instructors in small classroom settings or in one-on-one discussion sessions. Since all courses are conducted in English, both Thai nationals and international students are welcome.
The language track offers both theoretical and applied English linguistic courses. The theoretical ones, i.e. English Phonetics and Phonology, English Syntax, and English Semantics and Pragmatics, aim to establish solid ground for students’ understanding of the English language. The applied linguistic classes give students perspectives on different aspects of English in a wide range of contexts, including World Englishes, Second Language Acquisition, English discourse analysis, Sociolinguistics, Corpus Linguistics and Translation.
The literature track blends traditional fields with interdisciplinary perspectives which highlight the relevance of literary studies to society. In addition to period, topic-based and theory courses, it introduces new approaches to literature which are presented in the course, “Selected Topics in Literature” (eg. Gothic Literature, Transnational Modernism, or Literature and the Posthuman). The program attempts to tailor the courses to students’ interests.
The program has long produced graduates who make significant contributions as professors in universities all over Thailand. Our graduates also work in various fields in both the public and private sectors, such as communications, creative arts, the film industry, and international relations.
