New work: Work centered classification as communication

Classification systems help libraries organizing their collections as well as help users to effectively access and discover materials. For a special library that opens it doors to the public like the Bank of Thailand Learning Center (BOTLC), a classification scheme can helps communicate the missions of its parent organization. The public can now learning and understand about the scopes of work, roles and responsibilities of the bank.

The new article published in Knowledge Organization entitled “Work centered classification as communication: Representing a central bank’s missions with the library classification” co-authored by Songphan Choemprayong, our faculty member and department chair, and Chiraporn Siridhorn from the BOTLC reports the application of service design approach and methods in revising library services to serve the needs of internal users as well as the public.

One of the major products of the BOTLC service design initiative was the development of BOT Classification. The classification connects between the organization’s missions, financial and economic-specific classification schemes (e.g., JEL), and the existing broad library classification schemes (i.e., Library of Congress Classification Number and Library of Congress Subject Headings).

Since the new classification system is integral to the overall service redesign, this project was considered challenging from multiple perspectives, including user support and access service, space and facility management, staff workflow, and public communication. The development of the newly BOT classification was based two theoretical frameworks, work-centered classification and classification as communication.
