Chulalongkorn University welcoming Ambassador of Russia
On Friday, March 15, representatives of the Faculty of Arts joined Chulalongkorn University President, Professor Bundhit Euaarporn, in welcoming His Excellency Evgeny Tomikhin the Ambassador of Russia to Thailand. The main purposes of the meeting were to discuss the activities for the Center for Russian Studies at Chulalongkorn University and explore possible collaborations between Chulalongkorn University and Russia. In order to increase the visibility of Russia at Chulalongkorn University, the Ambassador wished to push forward future collaborative projects to make the Center more active both in Arts and Culture and Technology. His Excellency’s intention was shared by the Chulalongkorn University President. Suggested projects included students and staff exchange, participating in Chulalongkorn University’s Study Abroad Fair and Chulalongkorn University International Cultural Month, inviting Russian scholars and artists in performing arts, and establishing online sources on Russian language and culture. http://thailand.mid.ru/en/embassy/ambassador
Visitors from Hiroshima University
On Wednesday, March 19, 2019, the Faculty of Arts welcomed Professor Miki Shibata, PhD, and Associate Professor Naoe Kawamoto from the School of Integrated Arts and Sciences, Hiroshima University. The meeting concerned the collaborations between their Department of Global Studies and the Faculty of Arts’ BALAC Program as the two have many features in common. Some details include organization and operation of the Program in Integrated Global Studies and the BALAC Program and possible future activities such as student exchange and Summer Programs. Led by Associate Professor Suradech Chotiudompant, the representatives from the Faculty of Arts included Assistant Professor Nirada Chitrakara, PhD, Assistant Professor Penpisa Srivoranart, PhD, Permtip Buaphet, PhD, and Porranee Singpliam, PhD. The meeting was concluded with a lunch reception hosted by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Professor Kingkarn Thepkanchana. Although the Faculty of Arts has been connected with Hiroshima University for several years, this is the first time the delegates from the Department of Integrated Global Studies (IGS) visited us. This is because the IGS was just recently established in 2018. It is hoped that alliance between the two institutions will be a promising one due to their shared mission in globalizing the graduates.
Welcoming Bukkyō Dendō Kyōkai
On Tuesday, March 12, 2019, the Faculty of Arts had the honor of receiving Professor Shōryū Katsura, President of Bukkyō Dendō Kyōkai (BDK), Society for the Promotion of Buddhism. Together with Professor Katsura were Harumi Aoki, Executive Director of the BDK, Reverend Shojun Ogi, and Kasidis Sarasalin, General Manager of Mitutoyo (Thailand) Co., Ltd., an organization supporting the activities of the BDK. The purpose of the meeting was to become acquainted with Buddhist activities of both the BDK and the Faculty of Arts. Most importantly, the BDK wished to support the study of Japanese Buddhism by establishing the Namata Visiting Scholar System at the Faculty of Arts. The system is a program to help fund visiting scholars in Japanese Buddhism. The representatives from the Faculty of Arts led by the Dean, Professor Kingkarn Thepkanchana, PhD, were Professor Bhadra Rujirathat, PhD (Peter Skilling), Khyentse Fellow, Associate Professor Suradech Chotiudompant, PhD, Assistant Professor Nirada Chitrakara, PhD, Assistant Professor Namphueng Padamalangula, PhD, Assistant Professor Siriporn Pakdeepasuk, PhD, Assistant Professor Chanwit Tudkeo, PhD, Assistant Professor Arthid Sheravanichkul, PhD, and Sompornnuch Tansrisook, PhD. Also present was Assistant Professor Pratoom Angurarohita, Director of the Center for Buddhist Studies, Chulalongkorn University. Professor Shōryū Katsura is the author and editor of publications on various facets of classical Indian Buddhist thought. He is best known for his work on Buddhist epistemology—the thought of Dignaga, Dharmakirti, and their commentators.
