What programs does the Thai Studies Center offer?

Thai Studies Center offers two degree programs:

  • Master of Arts (M.A.) in Thai Studies

  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Thai Studies

 

Do applicants need to know the Thai language?

Thai language proficiency is not a requirement for admission. However, prior knowledge of Thai language, culture, society, or history will be considered an advantage, especially for research purposes.

What is the main focus of Thai Studies?

Thai Studies is an interdisciplinary field that focuses on Thailand and the broader Thai-speaking world. Core areas include history, culture, society, religion, politics, literature, and related fields. While the programs focus on Thailand, they encourage comparative, regional, and transnational perspectives.

What should be included in the research proposal for applying Ph.D. program?

A preliminary research proposal should clearly demonstrate academic relevance to Thai Studies and normally includes:

  • Proposed research title

  • Background and literature review

  • Research objectives and research questions (or hypotheses, where applicable)

  • Significance of the study to Thai Studies

  • Preliminary methodology

The research proposal is a major component of the admission evaluation.

Are the programs taught in Thai or English?

All courses in both the M.A. and Ph.D. programs are taught in English. Students are expected to have sufficient English proficiency to participate effectively in coursework, discussions, and academic writing.

How long does it take to complete each program?

  • M.A. in Thai Studies: normally 2 years

  • Ph.D. in Thai Studies: normally 3–5 years
