Celebrating 60th Anniversary of the Department of Eastern Languages

On Thursday, December 16, 2021, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn presided over a virtual international conference celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Department of Eastern Languages entitled Stream of Knowledge. Organized by the Department of Eastern Languages, the conference was broadcasted from the 7th floor of the Central Library, Chulalongkorn University. The event started with a congratulation message from Professor Hao Ping, President of Peking University followed by presentations from Professor Bo Wenze from Peking University on What is hidden in the language and Assistant Professor Satomi Hiyama from Kyoto University on Intercultural Exchange on the Silk Road: Syncretistic cosmology in the Buddhist cave art of Dunhuang in the early 6th century. The celebration was concluded by a presentation on the history of the Department of Eastern Asian Languages. Established in 1963, the Department of Eastern Languages started with the teaching of Japanese, Pali-Sanskrit, Bahasa Malayu, and Chinese, respectively. More languages were later added, namely, Vietnamese, Burmese, Arabic, and Korean. 

Onsite participants at the Central Library included Professor Bundhit Eua-arporn, President of Chulalongkorn University, Assistant Professor Pomthong Malakul, Vice President, Associate Professor Suradech Chotiudompant, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and faculty staff from the Department of Eastern Languages.
