(Applied linguistics)

What is linguistics?

The ability to speak and to understand language is an innate human attribute. All of us can use language to express knowledge, ideas, attitudes, and experiences but very few of us question this ability and are aware of it. Linguists are a group of people who are aware of the human ability to use language and who are trying to study properties of language as a system of symbols which people in different societies use to communicate with one another.

Linguistics is not a study of language which aims at developing language skills. Rather, it aims to understandthe nature and properties of language by means of linguistic theories and scientific research methodology. Linguists are interested in various issues such as the characteristics of speech sounds, grammatical structures, children’s language acquisition, the ability to understand and interpret words and sentences, etc.

Linguistics subdivides into two major branches, namely, general linguistics, and applied linguistics.

  1. General linguistics studies language independently from other disciplines. It studies linguistic properties primarily for its own sake, not for application purposes. General linguistics focuses mainly on the study of sounds, words, meanings, grammatical structures and language change.
  2. Applied linguistics studies language in relation to other disciplines such as sociology, anthropology, psychology, education and computer science. Linguistic knowledge can be used for various purposes such as teaching a foreign language, speech therapy, speech synthesis and the creation of artificial intelligence.
