Meeting with American University of Cairo

On Monday, June 6, 2022, Chulalongkorn University Office of International Affairs (OIA), together with the Royal Thai Embassy of Cairo hosted a meeting between American University of Cairo (AUC), Faculty of Political Science, and Faculty of Arts. The meeting concerns collaborations in the fields of history, social sciences, and Arabic language. The meeting call arose from the increased needs for connections and cultural understanding between countries in ASEAN and Egypt. Possible collaborations concern student/staff exchanges and other collaborative activities. On the Faculty of Arts’ side, the AUC can support the study of Arabic language and culture, whereas the AUC is looking for support studying ASEAN culture. Further discussions regarding details of specific activities are expected in the future. 

The amicable discussion was led by Itt Theerarath, Second Secretary, Royal Thai Embassy of Cairo, together with Dispol Sivaratanatamrong, Officer, Unit of International Protocol and Information Support Service, Chula OIA.  The AUC party comprises Olivier Schouteden, Department of History, Emiko Stock, Department of Sociology, Egyptology and Anthropology, Dahlia El-Tayeb, Senior Director, International Programs (IPSO), and Sarah El-Fiky, Officer, International Programs (IPSO). The participants from the Faculty of Political Science included Kasira Cheeppensook, Deputy Dean (International Affairs) and Bhanubhatra Jittiang, Director of M.A. and Ph.D. Program in International Development Studies (MAIDS-GRID). As for the Faculty of Arts, in addition to Associate Dean Nirada Chitrakara, were Apichart Pongkasem, Head of Arabic Section, Department of Eastern Languages and Manop Adam, Arabic Section, Department of Eastern Languages.

With its English-medium instruction, AUC has the largest English-language academic library collection in Egypt. A result of the partnership between the east and the west, AUC considers itself the center of the intellectual, social and cultural life of the Arab world.
